Oh, it’s on! The Interactive Fiction Competition.

Adventure games will never die. The interface is simple, just a keyboard and your imagination. If you’ve never played one, see for yourself. You can play the original text adventure here: Colossal Cave Adventure. This version was developed for AMC by the original author. Just a hint though, you may want a pad and pencil nearby. This is old-school gaming; you’ll need to map it out yourself. Never played a text adventure before? You should check read through this: How to play.

Seriously, make a map as you go! The old school text adventures are real puzzlers; make notes and map it out.

Here’s another fun one to get you started: Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Text Game. And this one too: The Hobbit Text Game. I’ve included links to manuals and walkthroughs of these games on the side widget. There are so many text games out there for you to discover. Just get online and start surfing.

infocom

Infocom was one of the big companies back in the 80’s and their classic games are still around online and in the Apple appstore. You can find them for searching for the Lost Treasures of Infocom. I highly recommend this bundle. It includes not only the game, but the full manual and hints.

The Interactive Fiction Competition is a great place to start if you’re new to Interactive Fiction (IF). The games are created to be easily accessible and short, between 1-2 hours usually, and they teach you how to play as you go. Play and vote for your favorite games. Voting has to be completed by November 15th but there’s still plenty of time. You can check it out and sign up here: IF Competition. Have fun! It is so on!!
